Working with basic website pages
We call this chapter “Working with basic pages” and the question may arise: what are basic pages? Basic page is any content item in your website. An example can be a [page], a [member profile], a [product]. Term “basic” was used to point that some pages, such as product listing page, cannot be edited directly.
Editing existing site pages
To edit an existing website page – navigate to the page you need to change and press [Edit] tab at the top of the page (below the page title). This one and the rest of the tabs – are [Page Management Area] and it is the same across the website. The number of tabs could vary though, as different permissions could be used for different website content. It might also depend on the type of content we may want to edit (e.g. products have some additional tabs to manage [Stock] and [Attributes]).
Some pages will not have Page Management Area – as those pages are “Listings”. To find and edit those individual pages listed there you will need to click a [Title] of the individual listing item. After that you will see the [Page Management Area] mentioned above on the next page. Read below for more information.
Before creating a new page
Techniques, described in this chapter will be used in the rest of the document and thus we advise to read this chapter first.
Things to consider before creating of a new page or any other post:
1. Consider where within the site navigation a new page will be placed. Will it belong to Home Page, Catalogue etc.?
2. Will the new page has a dedicated menu link. If yes – where this link will be positioned? Some sites don’t have spare place to put a new link – thus you should be careful when creating a new navigation link as this may break the site layout down.
3. Page title. Title should be short, but informative. Avoid using {$&*@#%*(“)+`~’} characters in the title.
4. Page URLs are normally created automatically using page title as the pattern.
Create a page
Creating a page is as simple as filling out an online form. To create a new page, locate and click [Add New Content -> add a Page] link in the Administration menu or visit this URL: http://yoursite.com/node/add/page
NOTE! To be able to administer the website you need first to login as administrator. Always login into the website if you have site administration in mind. Website administration doesn’t mean to go to separate website area anymore (like in other old type CMSs) – and if fact is simple enabling of [Administration] block and assigning administrative privileges to logged in user.
NOTE! Due to caching mechanism and also due to additional functionality enabled when you login as site Administrator your website might work slower.
